Boston indie rockers Somos released their new album, First Day Back, through Hopeless Records, containing 11 songs and running for 27 minutes.

This is the band's "first day back" since their 2014 full length, Temple of Plenty, which developed a melodic-punk outlook. The new record is just as catchy and spirited, except this time around, Somos traded heavy drums and fasted-paced guitar riffs for mellow instrumentation and easygoing tempos.

"Slow Walk To The Graveyard Shift," the opening track, is a brief, 51-second introduction that jumps right into the wistful tune "Violent Decline." The emotional "Thorn In The Side" follows, featuring heartbreaking lyrics, sharp guitar melodies, and a captivating hook.

The album shifts halfway through with "Days Here Are Long," a slow burner with riveting keys and muffled voices. The intense "You Won't Stay" has a similar layout, with forceful strings. With foot tapping beats, energetic build ups, and a thrilling guitar solo, Somos takes it to the next level with, "Alright I'll Wait."

First Day Back is proof that Somos are able to keep an assertive sound, while progressing towards a softer, indie aesthetic.

Songs we recommend are "Slow Walk To The Graveyard Shift," "Violent Decline," "Thorn In The Side," "Reminded / Weighed Down," "Days Here Are Long," and "Alright I'll Wait."
