Watch above as Matthew Healy, the lead singer of The 1975, drunkenly makes love to himself in the band's music video for "Somebody Else." The song is from their most recent album, I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, which was released on February 26, 2016.
Before the actual music begins, we see three minutes of an eerie black-and-white clip of Healy changing from a sort of Charlie-Chaplin-meets-mime outfit into more modern attire in front of an anonymous woman who remains stationary the entire time. The video then shifts into color and follows Healy on a post-heartbreak venture into the night, where he visits a karaoke bar, gets jumped, and hooks up with a stripper. After all that, the video concludes in a bizarre twist.
Healy shared some insight about how the song and video were inspired by post-breakup jealousy, in an interview with the BBC:
I'm not proud of that jealousy but I think everybody struggles with that kind of ownership.
Both sides feel that way when your partner of a certain amount of time goes off and is with someone else in a sexual or emotional way.
It was the last song he wrote for the album and came up with the lyrics while in the back of a taxi in Los Angeles.
You have that guilty jealously. You don't want them but you certainly don't want someone else to have them.
It's worth noting that the video is a continuation of the band's music video for "A Change Of Heart," which features the couple dancing and having fun before the breakup.
