Dead & Company shared a few highlights from last night's show at Citi Field in New York City, which was broadcast live on nugs.tv. Below you can watch the opening songs of each set and the encore.
The band are in fine form, led by John Mayer's unbridled energy and enthusiasm. Is this what the Grateful Dead might have sounded like in the '80s if certain band members maintained healthier lifestyles, instead of becoming consumed by drugs and alcohol?
Dead & Company Set I Opener on Jun 24, 2017 — "Dancing in the Street"
Dead & Company Set II Opener on Jun 24, 2017 — "Scarlet Begonias"
Dead & Company Encore on Jun 24, 2017 — "Touch of Grey"
Kicking things off with an 11+ minute version of the Motown classic "Dancing In The Street" was fitting for the party atmosphere on a beautiful, warm summer evening in New York. They are still experimenting with setlists, breaking up "Scarlet Begonias" from "Fire on the Mountain" and finishing the first set with "One More Saturday Night" (instead of its usual encore slot).
Grateful Dead music has evolved from a sideshow to an institution. Now, 52 years after the band's first concert, the Dead & Company lineup are truly something special with a half-and-half split between original members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart with young guns Mayer, Oteil, and Jeff Chimenti. The old guys can still play great, and the Frankenstein monster of a group rolls forward in their own unique way.
