Joey Bada$$ is back with new music only a few short months after the release of his most recent LP ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$. The three newly released songs, produced by Statik Selektah, show Bada$$ harken back to the jazzy minimalism of 80's and 90's rap. Take a listen below.
Bada$$ rhymes melodically over lush, retro backdrops in "500 Benz" and "Love is Only a Feeling," two songs that stylistically incorporate a sense of effortless stream-of-consciousness rap in the verses. The beats consist of muffled jazz guitar chords, hazy keyboards and synths, deep melodic bass lines, and distant saxophone embellishments that fabricate a glorious lo-fi atmosphere around his laid-back technique.
"Too Lit," while more in tune with 2017 hip hop production tendencies than the other two more retro songs, still maintains a relaxed, soulful disposition rooted in a jazz guitar and horn-driven hook. The song features a vocal and guitar sample of Elis Regina’s 1972 song “Dois pra lá, dois pra cá.”
