Tony Sheridan, British singer-songwriter and guitarist who collaborated with the Beatles during their early days, died on Saturday. He was 72.
Sheridan met the young Beatles—then composed of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best—in the early 1960s. Serving as an early mentor, he introduced them to American R&B and, for a while, used them as his backing band. The Beatles' earliest recordings were in accompaniment to Sheridan as the "Beat Brothers" on recordings of "My Bonnie" (shared below), and "When the Saints Go Marching In."
Credited as the first British musician to play the electric guitar on television, Sheridan has toured with rock legends Chuck Berry, Jerry Lewis, and Chubby Checker. His final solo album, Vagabond, was released in 2002.
