On Monday night the Diesel store at 135 Spring street held a 2 hour rsvp event that featured an open bar (Peroni beer, Ciroc Vodka, Bulleit Bourbon) and a free short performance from British electropop artist Little Boots (real name Victoria Hesketh).

The event was scheduled to start at 7pm but I knew to get there early because these things ALWAYS get crowded fast and admission is not guaranteed. While waiting on line I found out that she was playing a sold out show the next night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Knowing this got me even more excited in this event. By the time doors opened there was a line around the block full of young, hip twenty and thirty -something’s.

Once inside I grabbed a beer and a spot right up front where the gear was set up. Alex English, a well known local area DJ, was spinning beats as people were filing inside and mingling around. Eventually the area I was in filled up fast and you could feel the excitement in the air. A girl standing next to me had asked if I was a fan. Now I have to be honest with you and mention that I had never heard any of her music. I’m just a passionate lover of music and always willing to expand my horizons and check out new bands. The girl had told me she was a big fan and had first seen the band perform three years ago at Coachella. This got me wondering how many other hardcore fans were in attendance.

The performance started around 8:15pm. Victoria was front and center behind her keyboard with the other three members behind her on their Apple laptops. The songs were heavy on programmed synthesizers and electro beats. Exciting, catchy, dance orientated were the first words I thought of to describe the music. Easy to sing along choruses and her amazing soprano vocal range got the people around me appreciating every tune. She often switched back and forth from her keyboard to step out in front of us to sing and shake her tambourine.

Halfway through the set Victoria notified us that her new album Nocturnes was being released tomorrow but she had brought some copies with her if anyone wanted to purchase one and have it autographed. Her debut album “Hands” was released in June 2009. Upon hearing her sing and the way the songs were structured I would compare her style to other artists like Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga.

The set lasted about thirty minutes, ending around 8:45pm. Judging from the crowd’s enthusiastic applause it would be safe to say that the band had converted some people to fans. I did not see a set list printed out but I will assume that most of the songs she performed were from the new album.
