Because the Internet, Childish Gambino's eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2011's Camp, is slated for release December 10th, but you can stream the whole thing right now courtesy of iTunes.
The album boasts 19 tracks, produced by Gambino himself along with Christian Rich, Thundercat, and Ludwig Goransson. The record is divided into short segments, bouncing from introspective, to comical, to boastful, and everywhere in between. Guest appearances include Chance the Rapper on "The Worst Guys," Azealia Banks on "Earth: The Oldest Computer," and Jhené Aiko on "Pink Toes."
The album as a whole follows a loose musical arc, with seamless transitions in place between some songs and stylistic schizophrenia in the middle of others. Gambino's weirdness may be a point of contention for some mainstream fans, but this record proves that he can turn it on and off at will. He refuses to neglect fun-loving anthems, but Gambino said early on that Because the Internet would be his most honest record to date, and he makes good on his promise. The singles are solid, "3005" and "Sweatpants" stick out as the most radio-friendly, but on the whole, the album tells the story Gambino wants it to tell. Musically, he deftly bounces between styles, singing and rapping in almost equal parts, but lyrically, there's an emotional theme that ties the whole record together: "Because the internet, mistakes are forever."
