Above watch Best Coast perform at the KEXP studios in Seattle, Washington. The lo-fi surf rockers kick off the session with "Who Have I Become?," a track from their latest EP, Fade Away, which was released on October 22nd. Vocalist Bethany Cosentino delivers a repetitive, fuzzy rhythm guitar while singing about self-identity, self-loathing, and fear of emotional commitment. Bobb Bruno provides the simple and satisfying melody, effortlessly sliding up and down the neck of his guitar.
Although Best Coast are sticking to their guns sonically, they have thematically departed from their previous album, The Only Place. The second song performed, "Fear Of My Identity," hits the nail on the head. With lyrics like, "The nights are getting longer, the pain is getting stronger / The hate is getting darker, the fear is growing larger," it's evident that the band's happy-go-lucky persona has acquired some darker overtones.
While the first three songs performed are from the latest EP, the band closed the session with the West Coast hometown anthem, "The Only Place," which exemplifies the stark difference in perspective between the Fade Away EP and earlier material. As proclaimed by lead vocalist Bethany Cosentino in that closing tune, "But we always, yes we always, always have fun. Yes we always, yes we always, always have fun."
