Films and songs have a complicated relationship. They have the capacity to bring one another down, but if well matched, they can also reinforce each other's messages. The David Yates-directed The Legend of Tarzan, slated to be released July 1, is no exception: its soundtrack is home to "Better Love," a wrenching single from Hozier. Released yesterday, "Better Love" is the first new single from Hozier since his 2014 debut album. Listen to it and watch the video on YouTube above.

Heavily grounded in bass and piano, with soaring strings and soulful vocals, "Better Love" fits right into Hozier's repertoire. Lyrically, too, the song is classic Hozier, from the focus on passionate romance to the allusions to religion. Released along with a music video that combines shots of the singer at a solitary piano with scenes from the film, this is a nice preview of what we can expect from The Legend of Tarzan. A quote from Hozier encapsulates his experience:

I was excited about the opportunity and the challenge of writing for this film project. After viewing an early edit, I was struck by the theme of endurance, and endurance of love through such a hostile environment. I wanted the song to be an intimate reassurance as spoken from one lover to another—one that might be issued in hardship or doubt.

"Better Love" is available on Amazon.
