My Morning Jacket have shared "Big Decisions" which is the first single off their upcoming album The Waterfall due out on May 4th. It's the first release from the group since their 2011 record, Circuital. Check it out on YouTube above.
Lead guitarist and vocalist, Jim James, elaborates on the themes of the album in an official press release:
What fused this record is, I feel like it’s a weird turning point for the universe. I feel like so many people I know are getting divorced or having kids. There’s so much change going on and I feel like, for me, that one chapter has ended. And if you’re looking at a book, there’s a hand flipping the page up and it’s in between the chapter you just finished and the one that’s getting ready to start. That’s kind of the sound of this record, and my life, the sound of the page turning and not being sure what’s coming next.
He really hits home on this track by saying "Go on do it / If you really, really mean it / Oh don't just hold back then regret it."
Lap steel guitars and piano add a great touch to the mix. The choruses are catchy, but what really stands out is the guitar lead during the bridge. It's powerful and crunchy while remaining emotional and psychadelic, intertwining with the vocals. Overall, a very strong track.
