David Bowie, one of music's most eclectic and innovative artists, has shared an imaginative, and lengthy, music video for the title track of his upcoming 25th studio album. Watch "Blackstar" above, then contemplate what you've just watched.
Directed by Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead) the video seems to center around a jeweled skull and a solitary dripping candle. There's an ominous feeling to the video, which also features crucified scarecrows, twitching people, and Bowie holding a Bible-esque book with a black star on the cover.
Musically, the song starts off with an electronic jazzy, prog-rock feel, then shifts into pop rock sensibilities about halfway through. The inclusion of horns give "Blackstar" a relaxed vibe at times, feeling like there's an "ordered chaos" underneath everything that's happening.
The song was originally written for the opening credits of a series titled The Last Panthers, which is directed by Johan Renck.
Blackstar is set for a January 8, 2016 release via Columbia Records. Pick it up on Amazon (Vinyl, CD, MP3).
