For his latest voyage into unconventional pop music, singer-songwriter Ben Folds has teamed up with the New York City-based classical ensemble yMusic. They'll be putting out a record of eight chamber pop tracks that will be paired with a Ben Folds concerto performed with the Nashville Symphony.
"Capable Of Anything" is the first single off the record, and while it has already been played at live shows, the album version was just released via NPR on June 5.
The track has the unmistakable bright pop sound that Folds is known for, but the classical instrumentation puts an interesting twist on it. With trilling woodwinds, dramatic brass, emotional phrases bowed by the strings, as well as some quick plucking, these instruments add multiple levels to this optimistic anthem.
At its core, "Capable Of Anything" is a Ben Folds song. His piano melodies further enforce this. It just seems that with the addition of so many musical possibilities offered by yMusic, Folds was able to take his musical vision to a higher level, and deliver a highly coherent and complex piece of great pop music.
The album, So There, is set to be released Sep 11, via New West Records.
