Jidenna's original "Classic Man," featuring Roman GianArthur and Janelle Monáe, was released on Febuary 20, 2015 as a single on Monae's label, Wondaland. The song was released along with the single "Yoga," by Janelle Monáe featuring Jidenna, on a six track EP called Eephus this past August 14.
"Classic Man" was produced by Jidenna, Nana Kwabena, and Nate “Rocket” Wonder. The song samples the Iggy Azalea single “Fancy”, featuring Charli XCX, which was produced by The Invisible Men.
As described in a manifesto on Jidenna's website:
The “Classic Man” record celebrates the neighborhood man that everyone knows and respects. He is the man that steps up to care for that which is not his own. He is the street elegant old-fashioned man, the urban sophisticate. He is a man that every man wants to be and every woman wants to be with. To both his lovers and his enemies, his charm is a necessary evil. Under fire, the Classic Man remains cool as Nat King Cole.
On July 15, 2015 another music video was released, this time featuring a fellow classic man, Kendrick Lamar. Watch below:
The videos are similar, describing a day in the life of Jidenna and his Wondaland crew. The friends, including Chef Roblé, Ty Dolla Sign, Janelle Monáe, Roman GianArthur, and hip hop producer Hit-Boy make cameo appearances in the music video. They go to the barber shop, they bring street thugs to their reform school 'Chieftain Academy,' and to a small speakeasy club, Brooklyn's Bedford Hall.
"Classic Man" is available on the Eephus EP on iTunes.
