If Juicy J's presence on songs by younger, of-the-moment rappers like Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller wasn't enough to solidify his comeback, this Katy Perry track should do it. The second song we've heard from Perry's upcoming album Prism, "Dark Horse" finds the pop star exploring grimier territory than usual, with Juicy laying down a guest verse towards the end of the track.
Chopped vocals that uncannily resemble those from TNGHT's "Easy Easy," a dark, brooding atmosphere, and a guest verse from trap music's "elder statesman" all combine to make "Dark Horse" a surprisingly charming pop version of trap music. Producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin are so deft in their handiwork that this instrumental could show up on any number of Hip Hop mixtapes without raising any eyebrows.
Yes, Perry is piggybacking on the success of an already-tired trend, but we'll be damned if she doesn't do it better than anyone else.
Prism comes out on October 22. Listen to previous single "Roar" here.
