Los Angeles-based DJ J.PERIOD has contributed a remix of 2Pac's 1995 heartfelt rap ballad, "Dear Mama" to the brand new Broadway musical, Holler If Ya Hear Me.

The remix is a moody, downtempo arrangement that fittingly opens with a brief speech from 2Pac's mother, Afeni Shakur. She briefly remarks upon her son's exceptional ability to express what others cannot always express themselves. The track progresses into an entirely rearranged instrumental that features a melodic ostinato on guitar that ends each phrase with a strummed chord over a backbeat that compiles simple-yet-effective rhythms on bongos and a tambourine. At no point does any instrument ever try to usurp 2Pac's timeless lyrics in the mix, but rather they serve to give a modern edge to a song that was released two decades ago. The new instrumental helps illustrate just how relevant 2Pac's lyrics remain, despite how much the world has changed since his death in Las Vegas in 1996.

This track has been made for Kenny Leon's non-biographical Broadway production on the iconic rapper's remarkably turbulent life. The show opens today, June 19th, at the Palace Theatre on Broadway, New York.
