Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne recently stopped by the KCRW studios in L.A. to perform a 40-minute set and talk with Jason Bentley. One highlight from the performance was the new song, "Down Here," from her thirteenth studio album I Can't Imagine. Watch that above, and check out the full set at KCRW.com.
Set up in a spacious studio, Shelby Lynne and her band give a vintage, southern rock sound to "Down Here." Shelby leads the tune with acoustic strumming while a warm organ and electrified guitar riffs from Ben Peeler and Eli Wulfmeier fill out the space. The band settles into a hypnotizing groove while Shelby occasionally shows off her vocal chops (which earned her 1990's New Female Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music Awards).
When you think the song is over, the band shifts into a mellow groove while Shelby and guitarist Eli Wulfmeier softly trade vocals to close out the song. There are hints of Neil Young's playing found in the guitar parts, and "Down Here" does have an aura of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Almost Cut My Hair" in it.
I Can't Imagine was released this week. It's currently available on Amazon (Vinyl, CD, MP3).
