"Everybody Knows" - Hurray for the Riff Raff ft Kate Cavazos [BandCamp Audio Single]

Hurray for the Riff Raff frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra re-released "Everybody Knows" this week through a timely series called Our First 100 Days, supporting causes which are being negatively impacted by the presidential administration of Donald Trump.

First released as a YouTube video in 2013 (this Bandcamp version is the same recording, but with better sound quality), "Everybody Knows" is an emotional ballad inspired by the tragic murders of teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida and civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. Joining Segarra is fellow New Orleans singer Kate Cavazos. Over a bare guitar, the two reflect upon the feelings of heartbreak and denial that come in the face of crisis. The result is a timeless protest song.

Organized by The Secretly Group — consisting of indie record labels Secretly Canadian, Dead Oceans, and Jagjaguwar, among others — the Our First 100 Days campaign is an ongoing project with the mission of releasing “one rare, unreleased or exclusive song per day," and giving all profits to organizations "working on the front lines of climate, women's rights, immigration and fairness."

The same group was behind the 30 Songs, 30 Days campaign leading up to the election in 2016, which had standout tracks like "Same Old Lie" by Jim James, "Demagogue" by Franz Ferdinand, and a live version of "In a Free Land" by Bob Mould.

Hurray for the Riff Raff’s seventh studio album, The Navigator, will be released March 2017 through ATO Records. For the latest music, news, and tour dates, check out Zumic's Hurray for the Riff Raff artist page.
