Bronx-born Rapper Joseph "Fat Joe" Cartagena has been sentenced to four months in federal prison and fined $15,000 for failure to file tax returns between 2007 and 2010.

Fat Joe earned upwards of $3.3 million during that time period, accruing $718,000 in back taxes, which he has since paid. His income came primarily from Terror Squad Production Inc and Miramar Music Touring, both of which he owned.

US Magistrate Judge Cathy Waldor sentenced Cartagena to four months, a relatively lenient sentence in contrast to the possible two years he faced, in light of his having paid the back taxes prior to his sentencing and for his charitable work.

The court received more than 60 letters in support of the rapper, including one from Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, who cited Cartagena's community efforts.

"There was a lot going on in the years that I didn't file my taxes, but it was my responsibility," he said.
