Purchase, NY based trio Crying have released their first full length LP, and you can listen above via Spotify. Get Olde / Second Wind is a combination of their 2013 EP, Get Olde, and a brand new one, Second Wind. The album was released November 17th via Run For Cover Records.
Crying play a creative, chaotic, and fun brand of indie rock. Guitarist Ryan Galloway incorporates electronic sounds from a Game Boy into every track. The two EP's combined work as a cohesive biography of the band's work, and you can hear the group evolve as the record progresses. The first half of the EP is wild and uptempo, as the chiptune beats hit the listener at light speed. The drums and guitars are punishing, while vocalist Elaiza Santos' singing provides a relief from the assault with soft vocals and lyrics about anxieties, not fitting in, and being bored.
The second half of the record, Second Wind, shows the band heading into a darker, punkier direction. The Game Boy effects are less rapid-fire on this half, and play off the guitars and drums to create strong hooks, without losing any of the manic energy it brings to the group's sound. Santos' vocals are a little more airy here and her intimate, intensely relatable lyrics give a more human element to the record.
Her lyrics on this part of the album see her learning to accept herself, even if she isn't there yet. She sings in "Emblem," "I am slowly falling in love with myself," which demonstrates her self-acceptance, but still leaves room for her fears to exist. Get Olde / Second Wind is a great introduction to an up-and-coming band and gives the listener the rare opportunity to hear incredibly promising development in a little over 30 minutes.
