Philadelphia singer-songwriter Timothy Showalter, who records under the name Strand of Oaks, has just shared the first track from his upcoming album, HEAL. "Goshen '97" features Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis on electric guitar, and you can stream it above.

Telling the tale of Showalter's introduction to music ("Then I found my dad's old tape machine, that's where the magic began"), "Goshen '97" is a rollicking burst of '90s-style alt rock that makes a classic Mascis guitar solo feel right at home. The guitarist dominates the song's intro and second half, but Showalter makes his presence felt with great, deeply personal lyrics, the best of which might be his pining for the days "before I was fat, drunk and mean." We feel ya, Showalter.

Preorder HEAL ahead of its June 24th release date from Dead Oceans Records, and listen to J Mascis' recent cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" right here on Zumic.
