"We'll try not to blow up the PA," joked Warren Haynes.
Lucky for us they didn't, as Gov't Mule performed a free in-store set at Guitar Center in downtown Manhattan in support of their new album Shout! In addition the band members signed copies of the album for anyone who purchased one at the event.
It was a packed room and eager fans were thrilled to see the band perform a few songs off Shout! in such a small space. They started off with "Whisper In Your Soul" then went into "Captured." It was a slow groove with Warren on a beautiful Gibson Les Paul. Midway through, Warren treated us to one of his signature solos that got a loud applause upon its completion. Up next was "Scared To Live" that started off with a relaxed, reggae-like rhythm on guitar. Keyboardist Danny Louis added his flavor to the song midway with a short solo, and towards the end, he and Warren were feeding off of each other, bringing the song to a trippy ending.
"Funny Little Tragedy" was next and it harkened back to the old days of the band, when they were LOUD and ROCKING. It was obvious the crowd loved the song. The band exited the stage, but we all knew--and so did they--that they couldn't leave us without an encore. Thankfully, they didn't and as they picked up their instruments a fan yelled out "Soulshine!" as a request. Instead, Warren treated us to another new song titled "When The World Gets Small." It had a slow, mellow pace to it that everyone was digging.
Unfortunately, that was the last song and it left me salivating to hear the band play more new material. They left the stage to a roomful of thankful fans clapping and cheering. Afterwards, people waited in line with their copy of the album and whatever memorabilia they brought to get signed. Regretfully, I couldn't stick around to thank the band for their years of putting on great shows and releasing impressive albums. Hopefully I'll get another chance soon (since it's obvious the band loves New York City).
If you would like to order the new album you can do so on the Gov't Mule shop page.
