Four years ago, Green Day unveiled a musical adaptation of their 2004 rock opera, American Idiot. The musical went from Berkeley to Broadway, and ended up seeing Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong briefly star as St. Jimmy during its time in Manhattan. Now fans will have an opportunity to see what went into the making of this musical production. Broadway Idiot documents the transformation of American Idiot from a punk album to a Tony award winning Broadway hit. Check out the trailer for Broadway Idiot above.
The documentary, which debuted in March at SXSW, now will be available nationwide this fall: On October 11th, Broadway Idiot will be shown in New York for an exclusive theatrical engagement. The following week, on October 18th, the film will be in theaters across America and Canada. It will also be available on demand via iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Xbox, Playstation, Google Play, Cinemanow, Vudu, and Movies on Demand.
This is the second Green Day documentary to be released in 2013. Green Day also produced ¡Cuatro! about the making of the band's recent trilogy of albums. Originally a trilogy pre-order exclusive, it will be available in the US on September 24th. It can be pre-ordered on Best Buy and Amazon now.
American Idiot is also confirmed to be adapted for the big screen. Though filming has not yet begun, at least one star has been cast for a significant role in the movie: As Green Day Authority reports, musical director Michael Mayer revealed that Billie Joe Armstrong has agreed to play St. Jimmy in his first major movie role.
