Owl John, the side project of Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison, fellow bandman Andy Monaghan, and Simon Liddell, have released the first listen to their song "Hate Music" from their upcoming album, also entitled Owl John.

The Owl John album was conceived in two disparate worlds: the Island of Mull on the west coast of Scotland and in Los Angeles on the west coast of the United States. Maybe this is the first time that these places have met. Maybe not. Owl John is about what can be found in both of these strange worlds. It's about finding a bit of freedom in an anxious, rotting brain. It is about being an alien man. It is about losing your wits completely then trying desperately to find them again.

Sounds intense -- and so does the song. An aggressive lead guitar riff sets the tone a few seconds in. From there the lyrics seize the baton, with phrases like "cutthroat friend" and "knee-jerk enemy." Soon you're enveloped in the epic backing vocals of a crowd, a determined bass, and pounding low piano.
