American Jimi Hendrix fans will be happy to learn that John Ridley's long-awaited Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is By My Side, is slated for a September 26th release, and the official trailer is now available. Watch above via YouTube.
Starring Outkast's André 3000 (André Benjamin), All Is By My Side is an atypical biopic. Rather than cover the story of Jimi's whole life, the movie chooses to focus instead on Jimi's rise from obscurity, his move to London, and his relationships between 1966 and 1967. The film is unauthorized, and the late guitar god's estate refused to grant the rights for Hendrix's music, so André will be singing songs that Jimi was performing live at the time, including The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy."
André's portrayal of Hendrix in the trailer looks powerful and nuanced, as does Imogen Poots' role as Linda Keith. You can watch a previously released clip All Is By My Side right here at Zumic. The film was screened in the states this summer at SXSW and currently holds a 91% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
