It’s been over a week since I downloaded Maren Morris’s new album HERO and I think I have an addiction.
It’s an issue because I can’t stop myself from mouthing the words on the train or tapping my foot at work. The album is 100% Maren and it’s refreshing to listen to all 11 tracks (I know, it's only 11… I’m sad too) and relate to every single song in some fashion.
This 26-year-old singer-songwriter has partnered with Columbia Nashville to release her first country album since moving to the country music capital from Texas. She has effectively taken what she has learned during her years as a songwriter for publishing company Yellow Dog. During her time there, she wrote top songs like "Last Turn Home" sung by Tim McGraw and "Second Wind" sung by Kelly Clarkson.
It’s clear these songs were the building blocks to the album Hero because they are unmistakably Maren. I’m in love with this album all the more due to it having relatable tones of Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and Rachel Platten. Her Texas roots come out in songs like "Drunk Girls Don’t Cry" and "Rich." The song "Rich" by the way is said to be a top contender for song of the summer. Personally I’ll be collecting dimes in her honor all summer long.
Here’s my Album Breakdown...
Best Feel Good Anthem: "Church"
Best Stuck-In-Your-Head Pop Jam: "80’s Mercedes"
Best Song for Boot Stompin': "Rich"
Best Cry-Into-Your-Pillow Ballad: "Once"
Song to Skip: "Second Wind" (sorry but someone has to be at the bottom… irony noted)
So yeah, I’m obsessed with this album and currently listening to it as I write this. If you’re a country fan… a pop fan… a teenage girl with lots of feelings or a 45 year old man with odd tastes, buy this album and let Maren show you "How It’s Done."
