Melodic death metal legends At The Gates have released a new music video from their long-awaited album, At War With Reality. This is the group's first new material since 1995's Slaughter Of The Soul, lauded by many as one of the most influential metal albums of all time. So how do you follow a career-defining masterpiece? By making one of the strongest metal albums of the year.
"Heroes and Tombs" is the second video released from the new record. At The Gates forgo the standard performance video in favor of an animated film to accompany the music. The video, directed by Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu, features creepy black & white animation that fits the song's dark aesthetic. Watch their first video from At War With Reality, "Death And The Labyrinth," on YouTube.
At The Gates reunited in 2008, but stated at the time they would not be writing any new material. Guitarist Anders Björler released a statement on the band's official website, saying, "It would be pointless to release something more than ten years after Slaughter of the Soul... it would just disappoint people." Frontman Tomas Lindburg further denied any rumors of a new album when he spoke to Blabbermouth:
No new record will be recorded. The legacy of Slaughter of the Soul will remain intact. It would be fun to write together, but not under the name of At the Gates.
Fans everywhere are thankful they changed their minds.
