Awesome stuff from Johnny Marr. Last night he played the Smiths' classic "How Soon Is Now" with the sneer, vulnerability, and a deep vocal qualities that made the song famous in the first place. During his lead guitar part (beginning at 3:15) Marr pulls some interesting tricks out of his hat, bending notes using the guitar's tuning pegs and then bending the strings above the nut at the guitar headstock, before finishing with a nice glassy sheen tone and locking back into that classic groove.
How beautiful is that Fender Jaguar that Marr is playing? Also of note, the slide guitar part is being done on a Les Paul with mini humbuckers which was a late '70s innovation that never really caught on - both guitars are sounding great here!
