On May 30th, the original cast recording of the new Broadway musical, If/Then was released. You can now listen to the album in its entirety above via Spotify.
If/Then opened on Broadway in March at the Richard Rodgers theatre in New York City. The musical stars Idina Menzel, of Frozen fame. The show tells the story of a woman named Elizabeth (Menzel), a forty-year-old woman who moves to New York City for a fresh start, and the friends she makes and the struggles she faces along the way.
Similar to other rock operas that have graced the Great White Way in recent years, such as Spring Awakening, Rent, and American Idiot, this new musical is the perfect cast album for those who aren't avid musical theatre fans. While it certainly is a standard Broadway musical with its emotional ballads, long musical interludes, and large chorus numbers, If/Then also has a pop-rock feel and several of Idina Menzel's solo pieces could easily pass for a Top 40 hit. The album is filled with beautiful orchestrations and lyrics.
"What If," the show's opening number, is very rock-driven and immediately pulls the listener in. The quirky "What the Fuck" is an upbeat yet ironic song about how Liz doesn't understand what is happening in her life. "Always Starting Over," the show's closing song, is a forlorn song about what Liz learns along her journey in New York. There isn't a weak musical piece on the album but Idina Menzel (who was nominated for a 2014 Tony Award for best actress in a musical) steals the show and her booming voice makes this new musical even more enjoyable and memorable.
If/Then features music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the songwriting team who won the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for 2008's groundbreaking musical Next to Normal. It also stars Anthony Rapp (who appeared alongside Menzel in the 1996 Broadway production of Rent), Tony nominee LaChanze, and James Snyder.
