Around 300 fans gathered into the 800 capacity West Village club Le Poisson Rouge this past Sunday for an rsvp only show to watch punk legend Iggy Pop and the Stooges perform songs from Ready To Die, their newest album in ten years, as well as a couple of older classic hits.
A shirtless Iggy hit the stage running and wasted no time showing us fans that age is timeless and has had no effect upon his stage antics and energy. Opening the show with new material, the intensity and rawness of the songs sounded like they could have been written back in the 70’s (Iggy playfully commented that they were). Often times he leaned into the crowd and allowed us to sing into the mic along with him, which eventually led to him being picked up and crowd surfed!
With the exception of one ballad, the new material sounded just as you would have expected them to: raw, fast, in your face punk that grabs you and doesn’t let go! The energy in the room exploded to new heights when the band dug into older songs like The Departed and 1970. The last song of the night, Fun House, found Iggy telling the fans to jump on stage with him to sing and dance along. Within seconds the stage was full and everyone, at least for this night, was a member of one of the most legendary punk bands ever.
