Today, jam band heavyweights Umphrey's McGee released a surprise album titled it's you. The 10-track LP serves as a follow-up and companion to their January release it’s not us.
The songs were recorded at IV Lab Studios in Chicago, IL during the same sessions as it’s not us. As with their previous release, the group once again display their musical mastery with prog rock guitar riffs and upbeat rhythms. However, UM explore varied styles on songs like "Xmas at Wartime" and "Hanging Chads." Keyboardist Joel Cummins shared a comment about the album and the band's longevity with Relix:
This is 20 years into Umphrey's McGee, and not only do we have one new album of music, we have two albums of music. We’re more fired up than we ever have been about the stuff that we’re putting out. I think that these two albums really do complement each other, but at the same time, they’re two completely separate pieces of art that stand on their own. I think you can kind of tell they’re from the same era, but at the same time, they’re very much their own pieces of creativity. They’re time capsules of where we are at this time, and that we’re having a lot of fun being creative together, getting out there and doing it.
While it's you may not be the first choice to introduce a new listener to the band, it's a nice addition to Umphrey's album catalog. Songs we especially like are "Triangle Tear," "In the Black," "Seasons," and "Attachments."
