August 1st, word got out that Karen Elson hit estranged husband singer / songwriter / guitarist Jack White with a restraining order, which he did not oppose. Today Jack White is firing back at Elson's claims of being an unfit parent.
Rolling Stone obtained documents from the Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville today and reported that Jack White's lawyer filed a motion directly responding to Karen Elson's claims made last week regarding a restraining order. He also responded to her petition he undergo a psychiatric exam as part of the custody battle.
White and Elson split in 2011, and their friends even threw a divorce party for the two. An ugly battle has ensued since then, in which Elson is alleging that White is an unfit father and harassed her. In the motion that Jack White filed it reads, "The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent toward his wife and children."
Citing a series of emails from Elson, White provides evidence, as recent as May 19, 2013, in which Elson wrote "You're an amazing father, I'm so glad we had these kids together." Cathy Speers Johnson, Jack White's attorney, calls Karen Elson's motion for a psychiatric exam "inflammatory...disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation."
In regards to Karen Elson's claims that she fears for her safety, Jack White's counter motion states that after he signed the restraining order she left their two children in his care for 10 days for a "work/pleasure" trip to New York. The day after Elson asked White to submit a psychiatric exam. His response reads, "One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days. The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties' minor children."
The counter motion also claims that Elson recently professed her love for White to their mutual friend Dean Fertita telling him, "I'm completely in love with Jack and I'd move back in tomorrow if he asked me." The motion states, "This is not the statement of a woman who is concerned about the emotional stability of the father of their children or their safety when they are with him."
Jack White and Karen Elson are set to appear in court for their custody hearing August 29th. Until then who knows what drama between the two will unfold.
