From Kehlani's soulful mixtape You Should Be Here comes a reality check in lyrical form, "Jealous." Listen above on YouTube.
For those who may not be familiar with the bad-ass, tattoo covered, 19-year old.. meet Kehlani. The California rooted R&B artist initially caught the public's eye on the TV show America's Got Talent in 2011. She appeared as a member of a band called PopLyfe, which finished in fourth place. The opportunity enabled Kehlani to begin networking with Nick Cannon, who became her mentor.
Fast forward about 3 years and the singer self-released the mixtape Cloud 19, containing YouTube hits such as "FWU" and "1st Position." This past April, You Should Be Here dropped with an collection of honest, personal, and emotionally revealing tracks. Receiving quite positive reviews from critics, the mixtape debuted at #1 on the iTunes R&B/Soul chart.
"Jealous" exposes the transparency of those trying to use the singer's fame for bragging rights. She puts the users in their place with lines such as "Don't wanna see no tweets about the night we shared / Don't wanna hear your reasons for it, baby I don't care / You and I both know I'm not just anybody / And I regret bringing yo ass to all those after parties." Lexii Alijai compliments the message of the song with strong lyrics amplifying the immaturity and irrelevance of the social media trend Woman Crush Wednesday.
