Joey Bada$$ recently sat down with Reggie Ossé on The Combat Jack Show for Complex TV in their Bushwick studio. The 18-year-old rapper specializes in his own masterful reinterpretation of 90s New York boom-bap - when discussing his influences, Joey indicated that growing up in the Brooklyn area greatly shaped his artistic trajectory. The MC hopes that his music reflects New York City's "essence".
"Like, you know just being from it - just walking these streets every day, there's a type of aura or essence that you feel," he said "Going back and listening to albums like Reasonable Doubt, Smif-n-Wessun sh*t, Nas', Illmatic, Tribe...you actually feel the same vibes in the music in these streets. At least I do. I took all of that in."
Joey went on to discuss being an internet-based artist, stating that "it feels great. The thing about the internet today, is that it's like this whole virtual city. I think it's really cool [...] I got on through the internet, and people from all around the world knew about me before people in my neighborhood did"
His now massive success came after having uploaded a video to YouTube when he was just a freshman in high school. He stated that his original intention was to "rap in front of a camera and just maybe it would be good enough, and just maybe it would get on Worldstar, and just maybe somebody would discover me from that. And that's exactly what happened"
The rapper went on to discuss meeting Jay-Z, crying after having been nominated for "Best Mixtape" at the 2012 BET Awards, and working with DJ Premier. Check out all the footage above!
Joey Bada$$' new mixtape, Summer Knights, will be released July 1.
