The Mountain Goats are gearing up to release Beat The Champ, due out April 7th. Check out the first single, "The Legend of Chavo Guerrero," on SoundCloud above.
For the album, singer-songwriter John Darnielle goes back to his childhood love of professional wrestling. Here's a quote from Merge Records:
Beat the Champ is about professional wrestling, which was an avenue of escape for me when I was a kid. Wrestling was low-budget working class entertainment back then, strictly UHF material. It was cheap theater. You had to bring your imagination to the proceedings and you got paid back double. I wrote these songs to re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there might be in them now that I'm grown.
"The Legend of Chavo Guerrero" is bright and upbeat, honing in on classic wrestling characters. The tune's guitars express the optimism that wrestling brought Darnielle when he was a child. They pack a rhythmic punch, as the snare, tambourine, and cymbals provide a more than solid foundation. The tune gets darker when he talks about Chavo Guerrero's enemies.
Beat The Champ will be the Mountain Goats' fifteenth studio album. Pre-order the LP on the Merge Records website.
