"It Ain't For My Health" the new documentary about Levon Helm's last few years on this mortal plain will premiere in New York on April 19th, with showings in select cities to follow. The film follows the legendary drummer as he deals with a reemergence into the public spotlight, financial woes and recurring health problems. Helm eventually succumbed to health cancer in 2012 and released his last record Electric Dirt in 2009.
Longtime Helm band director and musical collaborator Larry Campbell had this to say in a statement about the film's director, Jacob Hatley, "Jacob was the perfect fly on the wall... as we experienced the ups and downs of a wonderful time in all our lives. The result is a rare, artful and honest glimpse into the fascinating world of one of our true American treasures, Levon Helm.”
April 19th will be the third anniversary of Levon's passing and there will be a special "Midnight Ramble" at Levon's barn that will include a BBQ, a special screening of the film and a special performance and Q&A by The Levon Helm Band. Tickets are $125 and are available at for purchase at Levonhelm.com.
Campbell wasn't kidding when he called Helm a true American treasure. RIP Levon, we still miss ya buddy.
