After last week's social media erasure and a series of cryptic teaser videos featuring a snake, Taylor Swift has released the first single from her upcoming album reputation, which is scheduled for release on November 10. Check out the lyric video for "Look What You Made Me Do" above, courtesy of the artist's YouTube channel.
The electro-pop tune is defiant and ominous, with a mix of 90s R&B elements and tense synth-driven crescendos. Swift's lyrics are caustic and unsettling, singing "I don't like your little games, Don't like your tilted stage, The role you made me play, Of the fool, no, I don't like you.. The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama / But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma... I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me, I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams."
Co-written with Jack Antonoff (from Bleachers and fun.) and a credit given to Right Said Fred members Richard Fairbrass, Fred Fairbrass, and Rob Manzoli, "Look What You Made Me Do" is more in line with Swift's vindictive tune "Bad Blood" than her nonchalant and breezy hits like "Shake It Off" and "22."
For Swift, the single follows a tumultuous few years since 2014's 1989. Recently, the singer won a $1 countersuit against former radio disc jockey David Mueller, alleging that he touched her non consensually. Rolling Stone has published a detailed list of Swift's drama since the release of her last studio album.
