"LoveHate Thing" by Wale, and featuring the honey-voiced Sam Dew, now has a video to match the track. The video features Wale, Dew and a band performing in three-piece suits in a swanky penthouse loft. The group sways while they play, making these tender R&B choruses feel even more soulful.
The video moves back and forth between shots of the loft performance and shots of Wale and Dew singing and rapping in rooms and neighborhoods around D.C. The places where Wale and Dew sing look a lot less classy than the penthouse. That's because they are. It is clear that Wale grew up in a lower-income neighborhood in the city and that he is sharing some of his own experiences growing up there. He talks about the love and loyalty he has for his city and the hate he has for it for making him struggle. It's just a love hate thing I guess.
"LoveHate Thing" samples a track from one of the kings of soul, the one and only Marvin Gaye. It would've made him proud. Check out "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye below.
Check out the videos above and make sure to take a listen to Wale's new album The Gifted, which is streaming for free on iTunes.
