With Mayer Hawthorne's third LP, Where Does This Door Go, set to drop July 16th, the Detroit neo-Motown crooner (I just coined that title) has coupled the release of the album with a short documentary entitled "Behind The Door". A combination of interviews and studio footage gives fans an inside look into Hawthorne's recording process and his interactions with the album's collaborators, most notably Pharrell.
In the trailer, we see Hawthorne and Pharrell working out hooks on their keys and generally vibing out in the lab. Pharrell compares Hawthorne to Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, saying that the level of instrumentation that Mayer makes listenable to the public is reminiscent of what Steely Dan first accomplished in the 70's. High praise.
