Up-and-coming artists like Mikky Ekko are the reason I always try to catch the opening act at concerts. You never know who you’ll see and who they’ll become. It’s the opportunity to see an artist perform before they make it big and start selling out venues in 30 minutes.

While Ekko may still be up-and-coming, he technically already made his mainstream debut back in 2012 when he was featured on Rihanna’s hit song “Stay,” which he co-wrote with Justin Parker. That collaboration resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo / Group Performance. Since then, he’s released “Kids,” “Pull Me Down,” “Smile,” and most recently, “Mourning Doves.” His debut full-length album, Time, is set to be released on January 20, 2015.

On Tuesday, Ekko took the stage at Boston’s Orpheum Theater as the opener for English experimental rock band, alt-J. Dressed in all black with no part in his signature curly hair, he performed songs from his upcoming album, making sure to introduce himself as people continued to fill the 2,700-person venue.

Whether you were already familiar with his previously released songs, or knew him only as Rihanna’s one-time duet partner, this performance served as a great album preview and showcase of Ekko’s vocal abilities. With ballads like the title track, "Time," which featured accompaniment by only guitarist, Dave Quon, and the upbeat, set-closing “Love You Crazy,” it’s clear that he’s a singer-songwriter with staying power.

Time is available for pre-order on Amazon (MP3), iTunes, and his official store.
