Portugal. The Man released the official music video for "Modern Jesus" today.
The video is a fascinating accompaniment to the song that proclaims in the chorus:
Don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus
To roll with us
The only rule we need is never giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us
Imagery goes from the church to the confederate flag, with everything from firing guns and backyard wrestling to smoking, booty shake dancing (is that "twerking"? I'm behind the times...) and riding ATVs. Things end up back in the church, which is a peaceful change of pace from the rest of the video, although the image of bloody Jesus is maybe the most disturbing image in the whole video.
The music is infectious. Produced with Danger Mouse from their latest album, Evil Friends. Great melody parts and a really solid groove and vocals that really pull you in as a listener. The chorus is an indie rock anthem that works on many levels and leaves room for interpretation. It's rare for a song with such a strong socio-political statement to be so fun.
