The hyper-weird worlds of the Melvins and the Butthole Surfers are colliding on Hold It In, the upcoming Melvins album featuring Surfers guitarist Paul Leary and bassist JD Pinkus.

The first track they've shared is about what you'd expect from a collaboration between the two longstanding alternative institutions. It's awesome and not-quite-pin-down-able, with more poppy sensibilities than you'd expect. Beyond the almost cheery nature, though, there's a thick layer of crunch just beneath the surface and strange, schizophrenic vocals. The second half of the track is a tunnel of reverb which devolves into a more chaotic soundscape, which is surprisingly the more familiar territory. Check it out above.

King Buzzo talks about the new record in a press release:

Hold It In is a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullshit. Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm thrilled.

JD Pinkus shares his less heartfelt thoughts:

It's very rare you get a chance to work with three folks from the 'Break A Wish' foundation, all at the same time," said Pinkus. "I believe they'll remember their experience with me forever (or until they finally all lose their fight with S.I.D.S).

Hold It In will be out October 14th on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings. You can pre-order the album now through Amazon. Also, be sure to check out Buzzo's recent acoustic album, This Machine Kills Artists, right here at Zumic.
