Rap phenom Your Old Droog has recently released a new rock-inspired mixtape to follow-up his 2014 self-titled debut. The 11-song Kinison EP sees the Coney Island rapper collaborating with El RTNC, DJ Skizz, and Marco Polo to make a mixtape with more rock music references than This Is Spinal Tap.

Your Old Droog spoke to Rolling Stone about the apparent rock theme in Kinison:

It's not like something we planned. I was mentioning a lot of people from the rock world in my rhymes. It was like, 'Yo, I think I gotta tie this thing around, 'cause it's happening too much….Porno for Pyros...it's like a dope way of saying your shit is fire. It's kind of like useless trivia, so I'm making use of it. I just got memory for useless shit.

Droog opens the EP with a comedy bit from the late comedian Sam Kinison -- the record's namesake -- where he rails against rap music and praises rock and roll as the superior style. "I like music that just kicks you in the fuckin' face," Kinison exclaims. If Sam was still around, though, he would have most definitely been kicked in the face by this mixtape.

Standout tracks include "Sonic Youth," "Rage Against The Machine," and the previously released "Porno For Pyros," all sharing their names with the iconic bands. "Gentrify My Hood" is another exceptional track, in which Your Old Droog raps about living in the rapidly gentrifying Brooklyn landscape. He raps, "All I really need is a coffee shop in my hood." The 25-year-old's status as a 90s kid becomes even more apparent in the track "Sasquatch In A UFO," where he makes reference to classic 90's snacks Fruit By The Foot, Gushers, and Dippin' Dots ice cream.

Your Old Droog's meteoric rise may have been from people thinking he was Nas, but it's releases like Kinison that will give the MC his own place in the hip hop echelon.
