Columbia Records will release the 12th volume of Bob Dylan's bootleg series, The Best of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, featuring rare and unreleased recordings from 3 of Dylan's greatest albums: Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde On Blonde.
Above, you can listen to "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence," an outtake that was recorded during the Highway 61 Revisited sessions. A different version of the song was released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series, Volumes 1-3.
The song is a bluesy stomp number, with Al Kooper providing Hammond organ and Mike Bloomfield inserting wailing guitar riffs. Dylan's storytelling vocals are crisp, and these alternate lyrics demonstrate his ability to insert playful humor into his words.
Bob's harp playing adds a bluesy emphasis to the song, and at the end you can hear him scream and laugh after delivering the line, "I got this woman out in L.A., she makes the sweat run down my brow / Well, she's good alright, but she ain't as good as this guitar player that I got right now!"
The Best of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 is a very exciting release, covering the height of Dylan's career before the motorcycle accident.
