"What a long strange trip it's been!"
In case you were under a rock this summer, the core four members of the Grateful Dead came together with Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti, and Bruce Hornsby to perform three "final" concerts in Chicago, IL on July 3, 4, and 5, billed as "Fare Thee Well." The music and energy that resulted from those nights was nothing short of magical. Above, you can watch the band play "Truckin'," one of the many highlights that will be included on the upcoming release.
As you can tell by watching the clip, the audio and video are great quality. Shots of the band, the fans, and the stadium ALMOST make you feel as though you're a part of the celebration. The song's tempo stays upbeat, and Trey contributes stellar guitar work. The jam part doesn't get too trippy, and although Bobby flubs a few of the lyrics, it's a magnificent performance that highlights how well all the members gel together.
On November 20, 2015, professional audio from those three "Fare Thee Well" concerts will be released in multiple formats. You can find the super deluxe box sets exclusively on the Grateful Dead's official store: 12 CD / 7 DVD or 12 CD / 7 Blu-ray. Fare Thee Well box sets are also available for pre-order on Amazon (Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD).
Back in September, the Grateful Dead released an 80 CD box set titled 30 Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Years (1965-1995), containing over 73 hours of music from the dead’s 30 year career, and including one previously unreleased live concert from each year. In related news, Dead & Company will be kicking off their arena tour later this month, with core Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzman, and Mickey Hart joined by John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Oteil Burbridge.
