"El Manicero" - Preservation Hall Jazz Band ft Ernan Lopez Nussa [YouTube Official Performance Video]

The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band recently released a live performance video of their performance of "El Manicero" featuring Cuban pianist Ernan Lopez Nussa. Check out some of their fiery playing above, via YouTube.

This performance happened earlier this year as part of their Midnight Preserves series of fundraising concerts that occurred during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2015. Past concerts during festival time have brought in all-star collaborators such as Robert Plant, Alabama Shakes, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. The proceeds of the series went towards the Preservation Hall Foundation’s educational outreach and archiving initiatives.

In the above video, the PHJB perform "El Manicero," or "The Peanut Vendor," as translated into English. It is one of the most famous Cuban tunes, known as a "son-pregon," which is a street vendor's song to advertise their product or service. At one point in their performance, the trumpet player quotes "O Come All Ye Faithful."

The group plays with a certain level of charm that perfectly captures the intimacy of the historic Preservation Hall venue. Ernan Lopez Nussa's piano playing is very effective in filling out the space and gives some Cuban authenticity to this New Orleans-based group.

The video was released last week to promote Preservation Hall Jazz Band's performance with Ernan Lopez Nussa as they reunite in Havana Cuba for the 37th annual Havana Jazz Festival.
