Indie darlings LCD Soundsystem disbanded in 2011 after an epic farewell concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. On Christmas Eve of 2015, they released an unexpected single called "Christmas Will Break Your Heart," which you can listen to above.

Singer James Murphy shared this description of the song on the band's YouTube page:

So, there’s been this depressing Christmas song I’d been singing to myself for the past eight years, and every year I wouldn’t remember that I wanted to make it until December, which is just too late to actually record and release a Christmas song. But this year, Al Doyle had a short break between Hot Chip tours where he could be in NYC, and Pat and Nancy were home, and Tyler agreed to fly out from Berlin for a few days, so we all recorded this together, reserved a pressing plant slot, and our friend Bob Weston was available to master it quickly. So that means, less than two weeks after we recorded it, there is actually a Christmas 7", which feels like something that could only have happened a very, very long time ago.

Anyway, for the Holidays we give you the previous, very long run-on sentence, and this song, Christmas Will Break Your Heart," which is another one of those songs which had about 75 lines of lyrics, though we’ve knocked down to eight to keep the suicide rate in check.

Have fun!

The song is depressing, but Murphy proves he's still got an interesting perspective as a songwriter and those creative juices are still flowing. It's a lot like "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" with a down-tempo lounge vibe that builds slowly. What the song lacks is what made LCD so great when they were a full-fledged band: a sense of humor. LCD are at their best when they're creating a fun party atmosphere, and this song is about as far away from that as you can get.

Consequence Of Sound fueled a rumor that LCD Soundsystem will be reuniting in 2016 with tour dates as a festival headliner. However, a representative from the band's record label tweeted, "hey idiots, LCD soundsystem isn’t reuniting. they’re dead, along with your good looks and cultural relevance." It's worth noting that the same representative tweeted, "THE BEATLES WILL NEVER BE ON STREAMING SERVICES YOU FUCKING MORONS," and a week later The Beatles were on every major streaming service. You'd think it's only a matter of time before any successful band would reunite and cash in on their popularity, although Murphy and the other members have stayed busy working on other projects in recent years. Only time will tell.

Only 1,000 copies of the "Christmas Will Break Your Heart" 7" single will be available worldwide. Pick it up on the DFA Records webstore. That 2011 MSG farewell concert was turned into a documentary film, Shut Up and Play the Hits, and 5 LP album called the long goodbye.
