Youth Lagoon's new single, "Worms," gives new meaning to the term "space rock." As in, it literally uses samples from outer fucking space. The track is part of Lefse Records' upcoming cosmos-cribbing compilation, aptly titled The Space Project.
Trevor Powers makes phenomenal use of his unusual source material, synthesizing his usual dreamy brand of bedroom-style chillwave with the epic, intergalactic scope of DSOTM-era Pink Floyd. "I might be a bit deranged, but I've loved you for a decade...," he croons, through layers of filtered harmonies, tinkling pianos, and shimmering arpeggios. Though a love song at heart, "Worms" manages to evoke something far greater, approaching that ever-intangible sense of the infinite.
(Side note: For kicks, try syncing "Worms" with any particularly trippy/enlightening part of 2001's 'Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite'. You won't be disappointed.)
