On Monday, legendary folk singer Pete Seeger passed away at age 94, leaving behind a legacy of music and activism that made him a global icon. Bruce Springsteen, friend and former collaborator of Seeger, was in Cape Town for a string of four shows when he got the news, and played "We Shall Overcome" as a tribute last night. Watch a fan-shot video of the emotional performance above.

The song has a special resonance in South Africa, as it played a big role in the country's fight against apartheid in the latter half of the 20th century. Freedom fighter Frederick John Harris famously sang "We Shall Overcome" before he was executed in 1965, and that actually prompted police to attempt to confiscate any copies of the song found in Johannesburg record stores. Springsteen, understanding the song's significance in South Africa, chose the best possible way to honor Seeger.

Tom Morello, who's been on tour with Springsteen, also wrote a great obituary of sorts for Seeger. Read that over at Rolling Stone's official website. Watch Pete Seeger's performance of "This Land is Your Land" at Farm Aid 2013, and visit Bruce Springsteen's Zumic artist page for more of his music, videos and tour dates.
