After years of holding all their unreleased material close to the vest, Led Zeppelin has finally given in to releasing deluxe reissue box sets containing rare studio outtakes and live recordings. Listen above to the rough mix of "Whole Lotta Love" via the Warner Music Germany YouTube.

What you hear is a bare bones version of one of the heaviest and most intricate rock songs ever recorded. There are a few notable and obvious differences between the rough mix and the version that made the Led Zeppelin II album in 1969. First of all, the breakdown in the middle of the song (beginning at around 1:20) is missing the very famous theremin section as well as Jimmy Page's guitar lead parts. Second of all, the second and third Robert Plant vocal layers aren't there during a few parts in the song. These are the elements that made the song experimental and mind-blowingly psychedelic on the official release. It sounds like there are several different guitar tracks already, but what you hear above is bare, with gaping holes that show when the band laid the tracks down, they left room for layers and had everything orchestrated ahead of time instead of simply putting layer over layer on top of each other until they saw fit.

All things considered, the mix is good and there are some effects and processing on the vocals, but the guitar and drums are pretty dry. Sonically, it's missing the excitement and power that you hear on the official version of the song, but it shows a human side of the song and the band. The box sets will be shipping as early as May 30th of this year. For more information about the deluxe box sets to be issued this year, read about them on Zumic. For Led Zeppelin's latest music, news, and tour dates, check out their Zumic artist page.
