"EP1" - Low Pros (Lex Luger & A-Trak) [Official Full EP Stream + Free Download] | Zumic

Back in February, the unlikely pair of A-Trak and Lex Luger announced that they would be releasing a joint EP under the name Low Pros. Now the full thing is here for our enjoyment, and it's free to download above, via LiveMixtapes.

Bringing together some of the biggest names in Atlanta's flourishing trap scene (Young Thug, Que, Metro Boomin and PeeWee Longway), a pair of young firebrands (Travi$ Scott and A$AP Ferg), and even onetime Cash Money star Juvenile, Low Pros have assembled a strong, intriguing cast. In the most basic terms possible, EP1 is the sound of A-Trak inviting big players in the hip hop world to Fool's Gold Records headquarters and injecting all of their respective sounds with a healthy dose of the wonky EDM the label's become known for. The resulting EP is trap rap imagined through the neon lenses of dance music culture, and it's a blast.

Fittingly, Low Pros bring out some out-of-character moments for all parties involved, including Que spending an entire track equating himself to Frankie Lymon, Young Thug relating a tale of being "raped by three butts," Juvenile ad-libbing his impression of the Aflac duck, and Metro Boomin somehow involving himself in the Skrillex-esque instrumental "Ohmygosh." It's nice to see these artists branch out a little bit, but the weirdness factor (in tone, not sonic terms) may keep EP1 from being as cohesive as its deft, consistent blend of genres could be.

The glue holding all of these oddities together is Lex Luger, whose signature style of ominous, larger-than-life trap beats keep this from being a summer festival-baiting, crossover novelty. A-Trak seems to function in "bells and whistles" mode here, making sure things don't fall to far into the trap by adding bright effects and other standard signifiers of EDM, which keep EP1 true to its collaborative promise.

Standout tracks here are definitely "Frankie Lymon" (mostly because "Why do fools fall in love, I know nothing about it, Momma told me 'bout these bitches and said she won't allow it" might be the best possible way to introduce a song titled as such), the previously-released "Jack Tripper," and the remix of "100 Bottles," in which A$AP Ferg saves the largely wordless original track with a pair of thrilling verses. EP1 is by no means perfect, but it's free and it will supply you with at least two surefire bangers for the upcoming summer.
